Why test my baby?
If found early, treatment can start early. If your baby has one of the medical conditions, its growth and development can be affected. Some conditions are life threatening.
When is the test done?
The preferred time to test is when your baby is between 48-72 hours old.
How is the test done?
The midwife looking after you baby will collect a sample of blood. This is taken from baby's heel with a special needle called a lancet. Cuddling or feeding your baby during the test will comfort them. The blood is placed on paper card and when dry, it is sent to a laboratory for screening.
When will I be told about the result?
You will only be contacted if there are concerns about the result. Sometimes the blood sample is not enough or has been contaminated. The test will be repeated if either of these things happen. If the screening is normal, you will not be contacted.
